SAGE, Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship, is an organization that fosters the development of entrepreneurship skills through the creation of real businesses in a classroom setting.
At the global competition, students presented their business plans before a panel of high-ranking international businessmen and women. Students then fielded questions, ranging from succession planning to profit margins.
Essence Scents, founded by seventeen underclasswomen, presented their essential oil-based mood enhancing room sprays and received a fourth place finish in the category of Socially Responsible Business.
Business Buzz, a team of three sophomores, received fourth place in the Social Enterprise Business category. Additionally, Business Buzz, which focuses on community activation, won gold awards for work on two United Nations Sustainable Development goals: to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls and to sustainably manage our forests and land.
The teams, who won the SAGE USA competitions in their categories to earn berths to the global competitions, made up the entirety of the US delegation.
The student entrepreneurs competed against more than 20 teams from throughout the world. Teams enjoyed cultural exchange programs to learn more about other competitors’ countries.
Both teams will continue operating their businesses in the upcoming year. Essence Scents is currently expanding their product line and contracting with East Aurora retailer Beauty Organix. Business Buzz will be working with Colvin Cleaners to promote the Coats 4 Kids drive this fall.
