Tuesday evening, 22 Mount St. Mary Academy students were inducted into the National Honor Society. The sophomore and junior students applied and were selected to join the society based on the excellence they have shown in the society’s four main pillars: scholarship, service, leadership and character.

The keynote speaker this year was Mount St. Mary alumna Amanda Mays from the Class of 2002, who currently serves as the Western New York Regional Director for Empire State Development. Mays had some inspiring words for the school’s newest NHS members.

“It isn’t until you reflect back on how important your time at the Mount was that you discover what a difference this place makes in your life, and the important values that you subliminally learn while you’re here,” she said. “MSM teaches you how to be a confident, independent woman, even if you don’t realize it.”

She told them about the paths her life and her work took that brought her back to WNY after moving away, to help continue to drive her home community forward.

“I never would have had the resilience to keep on going and to explore each opportunity in front of me if I hadn’t been encouraged to be me in high school; if I hadn’t felt the confidence to raise my hand and ask questions … if I hadn’t been able to hold leadership positions,” Mays said. “… In other words, if I hadn’t learned the importance of scholarship, service, leadership, and character – which we celebrate in all of you here tonight.”
