Junior Robotics Challenge

Mount St. Mary Academy’s team of junior surgeons took second place in the scholastic bowl at Saturday’s Greater Buffalo Junior Robotic Surgeon Challenge at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Student teams from nine area high schools participated in a three month robotic surgical training program, a portion of the program used by Roswell Park to train professional surgeons.  The program was designed by Khurshid Guru, MD, Director of the Roswell Park Center for Robotic Surgery, and Eileen O’Brien, PhD, STEM Coordinator for Immaculate Conception School, and organized by Erinn Field, program coordinator for RPCI’s Applied Technology Laboratory for Advanced Surgery.

In a second part of the final challenge. the top two students from each school competed by perfoming a robot-assisted surgery on a synthetic bladder. The surgery was rated by Roswell Park surgeons.
