Five Mount St. Mary Academy Seniors committed to compete with collegiate teams for the 2014-15 seasons on Thursday, May 8.
Caroline Dirr has rowed for the MSM varsity crew team for the past year, previously serving as coxswain for the Holy Angels Academy Crew team. She will row for Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
As leading member of the MSM Cross Country, Indoor Track, and Outdoor Track and Field teams, Hailey Rose Gattuso has competed in the 4×800, 600, 1000 at the CHSAA Championship Meet. She was instrumental in leading the Thunder to their first (2012) and second (2013) MML championship in Cross Country, finishing her senior season undefeated within the league, with a best time of 20:33. Gattuso will be running at St. Bonaventure University.
Molly Meka joined the MSM Thunder swim team as a senior, previously competing with Holy Angels Academy. Molly holds the HAA record for the 100y backstroke and was a NYS qualifier for the 100y freestyle, 200y freestyle relay and the 200y medley relay. As a member of the relay team, Meka helps hold the MML (1:39.35) and All Catholic (1:40.38) records in the 200y freestyle relay. She additionally swims for the Grand Island Swim Club. Meka will be swimming with the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Samantha Barry and Natalie Brophy will join Division III teams. Barry will play basketball at the State University of New York at Geneseo. Brophy will swim at State University of New York at Oswego.
“We know that college athletics can be highly competitive,” said Marissa Dauria, Assistant Principal for Student Life. “We also know each of these girls has the skill and the talents to rise to the challenge.”
The five students will be receiving their diplomas on June 1 at Mount St. Mary Academy’s graduation ceremony.
