Covid-19 Reopening Protocols


The health and safety of all Mount St. Mary Academy community members is paramount. Mount St. Mary Academy has designated the Executive Director of Finance and Operations as the Covid-19 Coordinator. The Covid-19 Coordinator will rely on the assistance of the Leadership Team, which consists of:

Mount St. Mary Academy will open the 2021-22 school year with the following Covid-19 Health and Safety protocols in place:

  • Social Distancing: Ensure that safe social distancing of 3 ft. is maintained between individuals while in school facilities and on school grounds, including in the cafeteria, unless safety or the core activity (e.g. moving equipment, using an elevator, traveling in common areas) requires a shorter distance or individuals are of the same household. Assemblies and gatherings maintain social distancing of a minimum of 3’ when indoors.
  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment: All individuals must wear acceptable face coverings at all times indoors, regardless of vaccination status. Face coverings must cover both nose and mouth and are required by all employees, students and visitors at all times when in a congregate setting, except when seated at lunch.
    • When seated at lunch, masks may be removed, however a distance of 6’ must be maintained. In the event that an individual does not have an appropriate face covering, a disposable face mask will be provided by office staff
    • Outside: Masks may be removed when social distancing can be monitored.
    • Employees may utilize gloves and face shields at the employee’s discretion.  A supply of each will be maintained and provided upon request.
  • Co-curricular Activities:
    • All activities MUST comply with all rules and regulations for the school day, including, but not limited to proper use of face masks and social distancing. Club moderators and coaches responsible for ensuring health and safety protocols.
    • At 4:00pm students will be required to wait for rides in the cafeteria. An announcement will be made at 3:45pm for students to clear the halls.
    • Bake sale fundraisers will be suspended until further notice. 
  • Illness Protocol : Any person exhibiting symptoms while on premises:
    • Immediate isolation into the health office.
    • If a student displays COVID-19 ill symptoms: parent/guardian will be contacted and the student must be picked up immediately.
    • For all other community members: It will be determined by the school medical official (school nurse or health /safety officer in her absence) if the individual requires transportation or is able to transport self
    • Readmittance will not be permitted until medical clearance is obtained.  Medical clearance will be determined by medical officials and upon negative Covid-19 test result and/or completion of quarantine requirements. Per NYSDOH guidelines, return to school will be allowed only after written confirmation of COVID-19 negative test results.
    • In the event that a student is placed into isolation, the 3rd floor office will be used as a secondary health office for non-Covid issues.
    • Complete and thorough disinfection will take place immediately following the vacancy of the isolation area.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Status: Vaccination status will be maintained for all students and employees of Mount St. Mary Academy. Status will be maintained in accordance with HIPAA regulations. Vaccination status will be used to determine Contact Tracing in the event of exposure to a Covid positive person. 
    • A copy of your Covid-19 Vaccine card should be submitted to the main office by September 10, 2021. Submissions will be accepted by paper copy or email to
  • Contact Tracing:
    • Upon report of a COVID-19 positive test result for an occupant:
      • All procedures and protocols will be followed immediately to mitigate the spread of the virus as dictated by the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) . Mount St. Mary Academy will notify the ECDOH of positive case(s)  and the health department will spearhead the school contract tracing with MSM support and guide health measures.
  • Cleaning Protocols: Mount St. Mary Academy will adhere to hygiene, cleaning, and disinfection requirements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Department of Health (DOH). Procedures include, but are not limited to:
    • Maintain logs that include the date, time, and scope of cleaning and disinfection. Cleaning Logs will be maintained by the Maintenance Superintendent and will be kept in the Maintenance Superintendent’s office.
    • Provide and maintain hand hygiene stations containing a minimum of 60% alcohol solution. Provide one station per classroom room and a minimum of 4 stations per hallway, gym, auditorium, cafeteria and dance studio.
    • All lavatories will be cleaned at least once during the regular school day: 
      • Spray down with an electrostatic disinfecting machine as well as all surfaces (toilets, mirrors, counters, etc.) being wiped down with MPC Hi-Con Disinfectant/viricide solution
      • Maintain plexiglass barriers in lavatories with double sinks less than 6’ apart.
      • Stocked daily with hand soap, hand sanitizer, toilet paper and paper towels
    • Hallways and other common areas will be cleaned two times per day utilizing an electrostatic disinfecting machine and wiped down of high use touchpoints
    • Offices, hallways and other common areas will be cleaned with an electrostatic disinfecting machine as well as surfaces being wiped down with a MPC Hi-Con Disinfectant solution
    • Each classroom will contain a disinfecting electrostatic sprayer for use after each class. Major areas will be disinfected by maintenance staff once per day. A rotating schedule will be put in place, based on room usage. 
  • Healthy Hygiene Practices:
    • All students will receive instruction in the following areas by the school medical official at beginning of year with reminders throughout year and reinforcement from all school staff:
      • When to stay home
      • Respiratory hygiene
      • Hand washing
      • Hand sanitizing when sink/water is unavailable
      • Face mask use and removal procedures
      • Appropriate social distancing
